Grandjany, Marcel was born on September 3, 1891 in Paris, France. Son of Eugene and Marie Jeanne (Hugo) Grandjany.

Education

Mus. education National Conservatory Music, Paris, 1900-1912. Studied composition with Taudou and Vidal, harp with Renie and Hasselmans.

Career

1 son, Bernard. Came to the United States, 1936, naturalized, 1945. Debut as concert artist on harp, Paris, January 24, 1909. Played in recitals and with orchs. throughout France.

London debut, 1922; New York debut at Aeolian Hall, 1924, later soloist with New York Symphony Orchestra. Annual tours, Europe, United States and Canada. Head harp department Fontainebleau (France) Summer School, 1921-1935.

Head harp department Juilliard School Music, New York City, 1938-1975. Gave Master Classes Conservatoire de Musique, Province Quebec, Montreal, 1943-1963. Member of faculty Manhattan School Music, 1956-1966.

Founder American Harp Society, 1962.
