Vighi, Marco was born on July 30, 1945 in Naples, Italy. his parents were Luciano Vighi, a geologist, and Loredana (Mocellin) Vighi.
Marco Vighi took his Master of Science in Biology from the University of Milano, Italy in 1969.
Marco Vighi is the coordinator of the Ecotoxicology Research Group of the Department of Environmental Sciences.
He was a researcher at the Italian National Council of Research in Milan, Italy from 1971 to 1983. From 1983 to 1998 Vighi worked as a professor at the University of Milan. In 1998 he became a professor of Ecology, Applied Ecology and Ecotoxicology at the University of Milano-Bicocca.
Besides, Vighi was a consultant to the European Commission in Brussels from 1991 and to the United Nations, New York City, from 2002.
From 2002 to 2005 Marco Vighi was Senior Consultant of the Project "Phase-out of pesticidal POPs in China", developed by the UNPD (United Nations Development Programme) and the Italian Ministry of the Environment, in collaboration with the Chinese government.
Currently, Vighi is Principal Investigator and responsible of the Ecotoxicology Research Group at the IMDEA Water Institute in Alcalà de Henares, Spain.
Additionally, he has published more than 180 scientific papers and books on applied ecology and on ecotoxicology.

From 1991 to 2009 Marco Vighi was a member of Scientific Advisory Committees on Toxicology and Ecotoxicology of the European Commission, the Director-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO), which is now known as the Director-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE).
He has also been a member of the Society of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry (SETAC), International Society of Limnology (SIL), International Society of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety (SECOTOX), International Association of Water Quality (IAWQ), Italian Society of Toxicology (SITOX), and Italian Society of Ecology (SitE).
Marco Vighi married Daniela Pezzoni on March 7, 1968. The couple has three daughters: Veronica, Valentina, and Virginia.
