Background
Singer, Marcus George was born on January 4, 1926 in New York City. Son of David Emanuel and Esther (Kobre) Singer.
(The Ideal of a Rational Morality collects the most import...)
The Ideal of a Rational Morality collects the most important essays by the distinguished moral philosopher Marcus G. Singer. Its guiding theme is the concept of a morality based in reason, which is presupposed in ordinary moral contexts and provides an ideal for improving ordinary morality and correcting moral judgements. Singer makes compelling claims that certain fundamental presuppositions are inescapable in moral thought, that fundamental moral principles can be proved, and that the concepts of truth and 'common sense' are essential to ethics.

(This new translation makes one of the most important text...)
This new translation makes one of the most important texts in ancient philosophy freshly available to modern readers. Cicero was an intelligent and well-educated amateur philosopher, and in this work he presents the major ethical theories of his time in a way designed to get the reader philosophically engaged in the important debates. Raphael Woolf's translation does justice to Cicero's argumentative vigor as well as to the philosophical ideas involved, while Julia Annas' introduction and notes provide a clear and accessible explanation of the philosophical context of the work.

This book brings together two seminal works by George Santayana, one of the most significant philosophers of the twentieth century: Character and Opinion in the United States, which stands with Tocqueville’s Democracy in America as one the most insightful works of American cultural criticism ever written, and The Genteel Tradition in American Philosophy,” a landmark text of both philosophical analysis and cultural criticism. An introduction by James Seaton situates Santayana in the intellectual and cultural context of his own time. Four additional essays include John Lachs on the ways Santayana’s understanding of the soul of America” help explain the relative peace among nationalities and ethnic groups in the United States; Wilfred M. McClay on Santayana’s life of the mind as it relates to dominant trends in American culture; Roger Kimball on Santayana’s most uncommon benefice, common sense”; and James Seaton on Santayana’s distinction between English liberty” and fierce liberty.” All the essays serve to highlight the relevance of Santayana’s ideas to current issues in American culture, including education, immigration, and civil rights.

( Liberty Fund recognizes the significance of George Turn...)
Liberty Fund recognizes the significance of George Turnbull, one of the earliest of the authors in the Scottish tradition, with the publication of new editions of his Principles of Moral and Christian Philosophy, his Observations upon Liberal Education, and his translation of Heineccius. These major works testify to Turnbull’s distinctive voice in presenting natural-law theory on a scientific model, in harnessing the arts to promote the principles of moral and civil virtue, and in extolling reason as the foundation of liberty. The short pieces in Education for Life: Correspondence and Writings on Religion and Practical Philosophy supplement Turnbull’s larger and more sprawling works and give a more concentrated presentation of his ideas. These extremely rare works include two Aberdeen graduation theses, three tracts on religion, various writings on education and art, and, for the first time in print, the correspondence of Turnbull. M. A. Stewart is Professor Emeritus of the History of Philosophy at the University of Lancaster, Honorary Research Professor at the University of Aberdeen, and Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College, Oxford. Paul Wood is Professor of History and Director of the Humanities Centre at the University of Victoria. Knud Haakonssen is Professor of Intellectual History at the University of Sussex, England.

Singer’s main philosophical influence lies in his attempt to provide a basis for distinguishing and establishing authentic moral reasons. In Generalization in Ethics (1961), Singer argued that, when properly used and qualified, the ‘generalization argument’—i.e. if everyone were to do x, the consequences would be disastrous. Therefore no one ought to do x—is a valid form of moral reasoning.
His discussion attempted to elucidate the components of this argument and ascertain its conditions of validity. In the ensuing years Singer has sought to distinguish his position on ‘generalization’ both from various forms of utilitarianism and from the views of those who focus on the consideration of ‘universalizability’ in ethics.
