Marcuse "Cusie" Pfeifer was born on November 4, 1936, in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States.
Marcuse Pfeifer earned a Bachelor of Arts from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, in 1958.
Marcuse Pfeifer opened the Marcuse Pfeifer Gallery on Madison Avenue in 1976. Prior to that, she worked for Robert Schoelkopf, running the photography section of his gallery from 1970 to 1976.
Marcuse Pfeifer was assistant to the director of the Art Center of the New School for Social Research in New York City (1966-1970). From 1960 to 1963 she co-owned and ran the Greenhouse Gallery in Little Rock, Arkansas, which featured painting, sculpture, and crafts. She worked for a year (1958) with the Museum of Modem Art in New York City.
Marcuse Pfeifer helped people, including Sally Mann, Peter Hujar, and Timothy Greenfield-Sanders to launch a career as a contemporary photographer. In 1978, she curated a show of male nudes, with work by Robert Maplethorpe, Lynn Davis, and Peter Hujar, prompting the New York Times reviewer to call for a return to "old-fashioned prudery."
Marcuse Pfeifer died on 17 July 2020, aged 83.
In 1980 Marcuse Pfeifer was made president of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers.
