Rennie Ellis was born in 1940 in Melbourne, Australia.
Ellis studied at Melbourne University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1959 to 1963.
Ellis works as a freelance photographer, writer and film maker, as well as operating Scoopix Photo Library and Pentax Brummels Gallery of Photography.
In 1976 he was awarded a grant from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council. Ellis also directed and wrote two documentary films, Escape to Cairns and Outback Australia.
The photographer is best known for his erotic photography and his "documentation of pop culture and nonconformist, fringe people and unusual subcultures.”
He is a member of the Australian Journalists Association, Australian Society of Authors and Melbourne Cricket Club.
