Margaret Denman was born on April 25, 1940, in Oxford, Mississippi, United States. She is the daughter of John Byron and Connie (Love) Gathright.
Margaret-Love received her Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and her Master of Arts in 1966 from the University of Mississippi.
Margaret-Love began her career as a director of publications at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1986. From 1990 to 1991 she was a visiting lecturer at Wheelock College. She joined the faculty of the University of New Hampshire, Durham, in 1991 as a professor of English. Since 1993, she has also directed the university's creative writing program.
In 1990, Viking published her first novel, "A Scrambling after Circumstance," which was released by Penguin in 1991 in its Contemporary American Fiction series. In 2001, she and Chicago writer Barbara Shoup co-authored "Novel Ideas: Contemporary Authors Share the Creative Process," a collection of interviews with 23 well-known authors, including Richard Ford, Lee Smith, Michael Chabon, Tony Hillerman, Wally Lamb, Sena Jeter Naslund, and Alice McDermott. In 2005 her second novel, "Daily, Before Your Eyes," was published.
