Margot Kernan was born in 1927 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.
Kernan received a BA in 1948 from Bennington College, Vermont. She studied at the Stanford University (California) Radio-Television-Film Institute in 1963, then took her MA in Creative Arts from San Francisco State College, California, in 1966.
Since 1975 Kernan has been professor of Speech and Drama and faculty associate for Film Studies at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She was academic director of the Antioch College Centre for British Studies in London in 1974-75 and associate professor of Urban Media at Antioch's Washington-Baltimore campus from 1970 to 1975. Kernan served as U.S. correspondent for the International Film Guide in London from 1966 to 1975. She works in 35mm black-and-white and color, and in Instamatic 110 color.
A member of SPE since 1968, she also belongs to the Society for the Anthropology of Visual Communication (since 1972) and Women in Film.
