Haarlem, Holland, seventeenth-century: The city’s chief magistrate commissions a family portrait from Dutch master painter Johannes Miereveld. But when the artist sees the magistrate’s daughter, Amalia, an illicit love affair begins. Miereveld creates a captivating masterpiece, The Chrysalis - a stunning portrait of the Virgin Mary, full of Catholic symbols, that outrages his Protestant patron and signals the death of his career. New York, present day: Mara Coyne is one high-profile case away from making partner at her powerful Manhattan law firm, and now the client that is sure to seal the deal has fallen into her lap. The prestigious Beazley’s auction house is about to sell a lost masterwork, The Chrysalis, in an auction that is destined to become legendary.

(Fifth-century Ireland: Brigid is Ireland’s first and only...)
Fifth-century Ireland: Brigid is Ireland’s first and only female priest and bishop. Followers flock to her Kildare abbey and scriptorium. Hearing accounts of Brigid’s power, the Church deems her a threat and sends Decius, a Roman priest, and scribe, on a secret mission to collect proof of Brigid’s heresy. As Decius records the unorthodox practices of Brigid and her abbey, he becomes intrigued by her. When Brigid assigns Decius a holy task - to create the most important and sacred manuscript ever made - he finds himself at odds with his original mission and faces the most difficult decision of his life. Modern-day: Alexandra Patterson, an appraiser of medieval relics, has been summoned to Kildare to examine a reliquary box believed to belong to Saint Brigid. Hidden within the sacred box is the most beautiful illuminated manuscript Alex has ever seen.

(Mileva Maric was studying physics at an elite university ...)
Mileva Maric was studying physics at an elite university in Zurich. Her rise from the relative backwater of misogynistic Serbia to all-male university classrooms in Switzerland was nothing short of meteoric. Her male peers could only try to keep up with her clever calculations. For Mileva, math was an easier path than marriage. Then, fellow student Albert Einstein took an interest in her and the world turned sideways. Their life together was a partnership of heart and mind. But could there be room for more than one genius in a marriage? The other Einstein: Mileva Maric was a fascinating, brilliant physicist in her own right. She was, in fact, the other Einstein. In the world of physics, there's much debate over the role she played in forming the theory of special relativity, one of her husband's greatest works. Was she simply a sounding board, computing the complex mathematical equations?

(Clara Kelley is not who they think she is. She's not the ...)
Clara Kelley is not who they think she is. She's not the experienced Irish maid who was hired to work in one of Pittsburgh's grandest households. She's a poor farmer's daughter with nowhere to go and nothing in her pockets. But the other woman with the same name has vanished, and pretending to be her just might get Clara some money to send back home. If she can keep up the ruse, that is. Serving as a lady's maid in the household of Andrew Carnegie requires skills she doesn't have, answering to an icy mistress who rules her sons and her domain with an iron fist.

In 1909, Clementine steps off a train with her new husband, Winston. An angry woman emerges from the crowd to attack, shoving him in the direction of an oncoming train. Just before he stumbles, Clementine grabs him by his suit jacket. This will not be the last time Clementine Churchill will save her husband. Lady Clementine is the ferocious story of the ambitious woman beside Winston Churchill, the story of a partner who did not flinch through the sweeping darkness of war, and who would not surrender either to expectations or to enemies.

2018Benedict/Terrill has been drawn to stories of strong women, especially unsung heroines, both real and fictional. A booklover from childhood, it was a gift from her aunt that sparked her imagination - Marion Zimmerman Bradley's tale about the women of the Arthurian legend, The Mists of Avalon. As she told Book Reporter: "This book opened my eyes to the hidden voices and truths lurking in history and legend - particularly the buried histories of women - and set me on an admittedly circuitous path toward a life of uncovering those unknown stories and memorializing them through fiction."
Quotations:
"I’ve found it very tricky to incorporate long-standing religious stories and beliefs in my fiction. I always try to be respectful of those beliefs and traditions, while at the same time shed new, interesting light on those stories. I also want to make sure I don’t alienate readers who do not adhere to those religious beliefs."
"One of the major challenges I faced in shifting from the historical, adult realm to the young adult world was to make sure that my characters ring true to the readers. I try to be careful that the characters’ dialogue, their relationships, their concerns, the setting, and even the characters’ clothes seem authentic... as it’s been a few years since I was a teenager! Otherwise, I write my stories the same way, because I know both sets of readers are intelligent, inquisitive and imaginative."
"I made the decision to utilize the present tense for the past scenes for two primary reasons. First, I wanted the historical scenes to feel timeless, and to me, the present tense conveyed that agelessness better. Second, I am intrigued by the idea that history and art resound in our everyday lives, in ways of which we may be unaware, and it seemed as though the present tense could bring the historical scenes forward in time to further that concept."
"When I was a very young child, my aunt would take me to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, to the Hall of Architecture in particular. And there, before the façades of architectural masterpieces from centuries gone by, I became entranced by the fine arts and began to perceive them as a window into the past."
Terrell dreamt of becoming an archaeologist and she also has three favorite museums: the Carnegie Museums, the Frick Art & Historical Museum, and Fallingwater.
Terrell lives in Pittsburgh with her husband Jim Terrell, whom she met in 2002, and their sons Jack and Ben.
She is an American professor and writer best known for her series of crime novels set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She teaches theatre arts at the University of Pittsburgh and fiction writing at the Chatham University Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing.
She is one of the famous American authors of the suspense, mystery, romance, and historical fiction genres. The novels written by her have been very successful all over the world and have helped her to establish herself as one of the prominent authors of her time.
She is the author of the novels Don't Be Afraid, The Next Killing, The Dead Place, which was an IMBA bestseller, and Only Ever You, as well as the short story "Loaded," which was featured in Pittsburgh Noir.
