Mario was born on December 17, 1941, in Sarajevo, Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mario studied at the University of Sarajevo and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1965. He also studied at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and finished it with a Master of Arts in 1969, Ph.D. in 1973.
Mario worked as an English teacher at the Nassau Community College of the State University of New York, Garden City. Later, he was an adjunct professor at New York University; also taught at the University of Sarajevo.
His first work, Mothers, Shoes, and Other Mortal Songs, appeared in 1995. In 1998 he published poems Versus Exsul. His most recent collections are Closing Time (2008), Epi/Logos (2011), and Framing Memories (2011).
