Lee Winfrey was born on July 7, 1932, in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. He was the son of Charles Houston and Norma Elsa (Wesenberg) Winfrey.
Lee Winfrey began his studies at the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. Two years later, in 1968, he obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. He also studied at graduate school at Harvard from 1971 to 1972.
Lee Winfrey got his start as a reporter for The Tennessean in Nashville during the late 1950s. This was followed by stints at the Knoxville News Sentinel and the Miami Herald. From 1966 to 1968 he worked as an instructor at the University of Iowa. He was a reporter for the Knight Newspapers and the Detroit Free Press before joining the Inquirer as a general-assignment reporter in 1972. In 1973 he was elected president of the Television Critics Association. He wrote his first television column for the paper Detroit Free Press in February 1974. He reviewed television programs for the newspaper until he retired in 2001.
Lee Winfrey played the guitar and often composed country songs.
Lee Winfrey married Mary Anne Hight on September 5, 1958. The marriage produced a son, David Dylan, but the couple divorced in 1977. Then he married Kiki Olson on August 24, 1978. The couple divorced in 1982.
