(Even in the middle of a large and affectionate family, Ca...)
Even in the middle of a large and affectionate family, Carolyn Winthrop was often lonely. There were times when she felt that her friend Rosemary, an only child, was the lucky one. Carolyn's older and younger sisters rushed around everywhere together, and by contrast Carolyn was the "in-between" sister. It was on half-regretted impulse that she decided to become a counselor at Miss Mary's new summer camp on Star Island, taking her younger sister along as a camper. But she wasn't prepared to be made head counselor all of a sudden - and she might have refused if she had known all it involved. There was more planning and organizing back of the scene in camp life than she had had any idea was necessary. Even with Miss Mary to turn to there were a lot of problems she had to tackle by herself: there was strain among the counselors, partly because of the boys at Camp Revelation; there was Gretchen who was bound to get into trouble, and did; there was unexpected tension in her relationship with Rosemary; and, most important, there was the question of how she handled herself and her new responsibilities.
