Joined, when 18 years of age, Victorian Horse Artillery (Sir William J. Clarke’s, Baronet., Ruperts wood Battery). At 23 years of age joined Victorian Field Artillery Brigade. Was selected as one of the officers for the 2nd Victorian Contingent for service in South Africa on 28 December 1899.
Took part in main advance under Earl Roberts through Colesberg, Orange Free State, and Transvaal. Promoted to captain in the field. Received discharge from 2nd Victorian Contingent on 9th May 1901, and rejoined F. Bachelor of Arts (despatches, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Returned to South Africa in command of a squadron of Commonwealth Horse (Queen’s medal, five clasps, King’s medal, two clasps). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; Captain and Adjutant Australian Field Artillery; late Aide-de-camp to Major-General Sir E. T. Hutton.
