Mark Lancaster was born on May 14, 1938 in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. He is a son of Charles R. Lancaster and Muriel Lancaster.
During the period from 1949 to 1952, Mark attended Holme Valley Grammar School. In 1952, he enrolled at Bootham School, where he remained until 1955. Since 1961 to 1965, he studied at Newcastle University under Richard Hamilton. Also, during the period from 1966 to 1968, after graduation from the university, Mark attended Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, Wiltshire.
In 1964, Mark arrived in New York, where he served briefly as Andy Warhol's assistant and also appeared in several Warhol's movies. During that time, Lancaster got acquainted with many artists, such as Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Helen Frankenthaler and others. Since 1965 to 1966, he held a post of a teacher at Newcastle University.
In 1965, Mark held his first solo exhibition at the Rowan Gallery in London. Later, in 1972 and 1974, he also exhibited his works at Betty Parsons Gallery.
During the period from 1968 to 1970, Lancaster served as the first Artist in Residence at King's College in Cambridge. There, he befriended Edward Morgan Forster, Dadie Rylands and Duncan Grant. In 1973, Mark settled down in the United States. The following year, he started to work as Jasper Johns's assistant and Private Secretary, a position he held to 1985. Also, in 1975, Lancaster was appointed a Resident Designer at the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. In 1984, he left the position, but in 1988, Mark resumed his collaboration with the company. The same year, he designed "Five Stone Wind" in Berlin, Avignon and New York.
In 1987, after the death of Andy Warhol, Mark created a series of two hundred small paintings, entitled "Post-Warhol Souvenirs". The work was later exhibited at the Mayor Rowan Gallery in London.
Currently, Mark lives in Miami Beach.
