During the 1970s, environmental and energy issues became increasingly controversial as lines at the gas pumps took center stage. Chapters discuss, in addition to these issues, domestic issues such as racial integration and the Watergate scandal, and international conflicts such as the end of the Vietnam War and the Iranian hostage crisis.

(Literature and Spirituality is part of Longman's The Esse...)
Literature and Spirituality is part of Longman's The Essential Literature Series. This book takes the reader on a literary spiritual journal through diverse works of literature. This anthology of literary works gives a taste of some of the ways writers have explored, shared, dismissed, or argued about the ultimate, spiritual questions of life. The first goal of this book is to give a range of works that show how authors can take us beyond our immediate, daily experience. The second, more subtle, goal of this work is that readers will seek to find health in their spiritual lives. In spite of radical differences, the religions of the world share a common concern: humanity is searching for spiritual peace which can give the individual an anchor to survive the storms of life. The editors of this anthology have their firm conclusions about how people can find peace with God. They invite you to also explore this issue for yourself. They hope that these selections will challenge you to seek the personal peace and spiritual health which Jesus promised.

2010Mark Ray Schmidt told: "We need to study both the uniqueness of each individual human and the common features found in every human. As complex, mysterious creations, we will never completely understand ourselves as individuals or as a race. My research is an attempt to understand those qualities which all humans share: use of language, responses to pain and joy, pleasure with life and meaning, fear of death, longing for peace, concern with good and evil, continual efforts to justify our thoughts and actions, urge to give others harsh justice, hope that others will give us tender mercy, longing for independence and freedom, instinctive ‘herd’ behaviors, longing for intimate love, ability to hate, continual use of ‘scapegoats,’ continual hopes for harmony... These concerns are the foundation of my interdisciplinary studies of the humanities. These studies include intellectual history, comparative literature, rhetoric, the history of Christian thought, and theories in psychology."
Mark Ray Schmidt is married. His wife's name is Linda. They have six children.
