Marta Marie Crisp was born on December 18, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Charles Morris Tibbels, a mechanical engineer, and Doris Herr Tibbels, a homemaker.
In 1969, Crisp received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Davis and Elkins College. She also graduated from Guilford Technical Institute in 1977.
Marta also earned a Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children & Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, Vermont, in 2010.
Marta Marie Crisp decided to 'become a writer' in eighth grade when her social studies teacher ran off copies of a poem she’d written, passed it out to the class, and read it aloud - without identifying who wrote it. Marta loved the feeling of being judged solely on what she wrote - and not all those other teenage criteria for popularity. So she was hooked on writing from that moment on.
First, Marta began her career as a reporter for the Associated Press where she worked from 1969 to 1970. After moving to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Marta worked as a registered nurse at Lancaster Community Hospital, Lancaster General Hospital and at Ephrata Community Hospital from 1977 to 1985. Later, Marta enjoyed a long career as a feature writer, reporter and reviewer for the Lancaster Sunday News in Lancaster.
In 2008, Crisp left her staff position at the Lancaster Sunday News to return to school.

2001Quotations: "I love history. I love all the tiny details that don’t make it into history textbooks - like the facts that fat ladies in 1599 were considered beautiful (they had to be very rich to get fat) and carried lap dogs to attract fleas away from their own bodies."
Crisp was a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and Dog Writers Association of America.
Marta loves to travel. She traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, Tahiti, China, Korea, Mexico, most of the islands of the Caribbean, England, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Vancouver-to-New-Brunswick in Canada, and all over the United States. Marta sailed five times under actual sail on ships of the Star Clipper line, and narrow-boated on canals in northern England.
Marta often writes about animals that hold a special interest, and a special place in her heart. Marta says, that dogs fascinate her. She used to want to be a veterinarian and worked in kennels for several years when she was in her early twenties. She loved reading dog books (especially Jim Kjelgaard’s) and decided early that it was her 'literary' dream to write dog books herself. In her work on White Star, a book about a dog on the Titanic, Marty did original research, interviewing the families of Titanic survivors and other premier Titanic historians. It was during her research for White Star that she uncovered the true story of the Titanic’s cat that saved a young boy’s life. She has written many books about animals in the popular "Everything" series.
On May 29, 1977, Crisp married George B. Crisp. They have four children: Meribeth Ellen, Matthew Earl, Jonathan William and Joshua Mark.
