Gregor-Dellin graduated from Oberrealschule Weissenfels in 1944. Also he attended University of Leipzig.
Gregor-Dellin started his career as a writer and editor in Halle and Munich during 7 years from 1951. He served as a writer for radio from 1961 to 1962. During 22 long years he worked as a freelance novelist and editor, biographer and poet. Simultaneously he worked at P.E.N.-Zentrum. His nonfiction books on music include an edition of the diaries of Cosima Wagner, and the biographies Richard Wagner, Sein Leben, sein Werk, sein Jahrhundert (Richard Wagner: His Life, His Work, His Century) and Heinrich Schutz: Sein Leben, sein Werk, seine Zeit.

Gregor-Dellin was a member of several organizations: German Academy for Language and Literature, Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, Association of German Writers and PEN Centre.
Gregor-Dellin married Annemarie Gregor-Dellin on November 9, 1951 and had a daughter, Katja.
