Martin Dean Lammon was born on June 19, 1958, in Wilmington, Ohio, United States, to a family of teachers. He is the son of Stanley Howard Lammon, and Linda Lou (Lichtenwald) Lammon.

Lammon received Bachelor of Arts degree from the Wittenberg University in 1980. Two years later he obtained Master of Arts degree from the Ohio University. Finally, he became a Doctor of Philosophy at the Ohio University, in 1991.
Lammon's career began when he was appointed to the Juniata College as a visiting instructor in English in 1988, staying at that position for three years. He then moved to the Fairmont State College, where he began as assistant professor, becoming an associate professor of English. He left that college in 1997. Lammon also taught at the Ohio University and the Pennsylvania State University. Lammon founded literary journal Kestrel in 1993.
Nowadays, Lammon works as a teacher at the Georgia College and State University. Later, he founded there Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program, as well as a journal Arts and Letters.
Over the past 30 years, Lammon’s poems and essays have appeared in such periodicals as The Atlanta Review, Black Warrior Review, Chariton Review, Chelsea, Connecticut Review, Gettysburg Review, Hotel Amerika, Mid-American Review, Midwest Quarterly, Mississippi Review, New Virginia Review, Ploughshares, Poet Lore, Poets & Writers, Puerto del Sol, The Southern Review, West Branch and many others. Additionally, Lammon has helped to create publications, reading and educational opportunities for hundreds of writers, both new and experienced, unknown and accomplished.
Lammon’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program was named one of the nation’s “Top 25 Underrated Creative Writing MFA Programs (2011-2012)” in The Huffington Post.
He is a recipient of Pablo Neruda Poetry Prize, which he won in 1997. He also won Non-Fiction prize from the Chatahoochee Review in 2003. Lammon became Georgia College Distinguished Professor of the Year in 2007. Next year he was named among authors of “Notable Essays of 2008” in Best American Essays.
