Ittner received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Washington University in 1892. Two years later he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the same university and Doctor of Laws degree in 1938.
Martin earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in 1896. Theh in 1930 he earned his Doctor of Science degree from Colgate University.
Ittner began his career as a private assistant to Doctor Wolcott Gibbs in Newport, Rhode Island on November 1896. He worked as the chief chemist at Colgate & Company in New York and Jersey City from December 1896 to July 1928 and at Colgate-Palmolive-Peet corporation (nowadays Colgate-Palmolive Company) since July 1, 1928.
Martin also served as chemical engineer and director of research of both companies Delegate of the United States Government to First World Chemical Engineering Congress in London in 1936.
Ittner was a member of American Institute of Chemical Engineers (president, 1936-1937) and club of Chemists (president, 1935-1936).
On November 20, 1900 Martin Ittner married Emilie A. Younglof. On July 21, 1934 he married Hildegard Hirsche. They have 3 children.
