Martti Mäntylä was born on June 11, 1955 in Helsinki, Finland. He is the son of Tapani and Inkeri (Ryhänen) Mäntylä.
Martti Mäntylä obtained his Master of Science from Helsinki University of Technology in 1979. He then received his Licentiate degree from Helsinki University of Technology in 1981. Mäntylä obtained his Doctor of Science in computer science also from Helsinki University of Technology in 1983.
Martti Mäntylä was a post-doctoral visitor at Stanford University in 1983-1984, a visiting scientist at IBM Research Division in 1989 and a visiting professor at Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics in 1996-1997.
Martti Mäntylä joined the staff of Aalto University as a research associate in 1980. In 1983 he was promoted to a senior research associate, becoming a full professor four years later. Mäntylä was a professor of Information Technology at Aalto University until 2019.
Martti Mäntylä also was a research director from 1999 to 2008 at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology. From 2009 to 2012 he was a principal scientist there.
From 2010 until end of 2013 he was the Chief Strategy Officer of EIT ICT Labs, the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) in information society of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT). In addition, Mäntylä has been chair of professor’s council of Aalto University since 2010.
