Mary then joined the University of Illinois as an assistant professor of library science, working in this position during the 1940s and 1950s. Then she was an associate professor in 1959. Mary remained at the University of Illinois throughout the rest of her career, becoming a professor of library science in 1968 and retiring as professor emeritus in 1974.
