Mary Nethery received Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) at Humboldt State University, and then she earned Master of Arts at the University of San Francisco.
Since 1977 Mary works as a staff development coordinator and editor at the Humboldt County Office of Education in Eureka. Nevertheless, currently she spends most of her time on writing books. She has collaborated with her friend, Newbery Honor recipient Kirby Larson, to write "Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship and Survival", and "Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine and a Miracle."
Mary's newest picture book, illustrated by John Manders, is "The Famous Nini: A Mostly True Story of How a Plain White Cat Became a Star. Set in 1890's Venice, it tells the story of the meteoric rise of a plain white cat to the world stage.
Mary's book "Two Bobbies" has received 15 State Children's Choice Awards, the ASPCA Henry Bergh Children's Book Award, and the SIBA Book Award. Moreover, it's a Junior Library Guild selection; IRA Teacher's choice; IRA/CBC Children's Choice; a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People. It is also included in the Best Children's Books of the Year, Bank Street College, and was featured on NPR's "All Things Considered."
Mary travels extensively and possesses a passion for animals, adventure, fashion, laughter, kindness and spunky characters - all of which weave their way into her books.
On August 8, 1970, Mary married an environmental health administrator Harry Arthur Nethery III, with whom she gave birth to the son Harry Arthur IV.
