Mary Winifred Walters is a Canadian award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction, based in Toronto, Ontario.
Background
Mary Winifred Walters was born on November 25, 1949, in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada. She is the daughter of Robert Kenneth and Marjorie Alice (Roe) Walters. Her family moved to Ontario when she was two, settling in London. When she was 14, she moved back to Alberta, where she received her education.
Education
Walters graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1970.
Walters started her career as a junior high school teacher at Thorhild, Wetaskiwin, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1971. In 1988, she went to Lone Pine Publishing, where she worked as an editor in chief.
Currently, Walters works as a freelance writer, living in Toronto, Ontario. She has published four novels – including Rita Just Wants to Be Thin, The Woman Upstairs, and The Adventures of Don Valiente and the Apache Canyon Kid (co-authored with John A. Aragon). She has also published a collection of short stories entitled Cool and created two hour-long radio documentaries for CBC’s Ideas.
Achievements
Mary W. Walters is an award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction. Mary’s writing has been recognized with a Writers Guild of Alberta Award for Excellence in Writing as well as several other awards and prizes. It has been short-listed for the Journey Prize and has been a finalist in two CBC literary competitions.
In October, 2016, Mary was invited to sit on the National Council of The Writers' Union of Canada, as an Advocate.
Walters is a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada, Rio Terrace Community League, Writers Guild of Alberta and Wordworks Society of Alberta.

Walters married Gerald A. Riskin on February 23, 1973. The marriage, however, ended in a divorce in 1981. Walters has 2 children, Daniel Kenneth and Matthew David.
