Davis was born on February 13, 1882 in Bangor, Maine, United States; the daughter of Owen Warren Davis and Abigail (Gould) Davis.
Davis began her career as an assistant librarian at Brooklyn Public Library in 1905. Five years later she took the same position at New York Public Library. Then in 1913, Mary became a children's librarian at that library. Also she served as a supervisor storytelling at New York Public Library from 1922 to until her retirement in 1944. In addition, Davis taught a course in storytelling at Columbia University's Library School.
