Masako Taira was born in 1157. She was a daughter of Tokimasa Hojo.
When Yoritomo was a protege of Tokimasa, he fell in love with her. Tokimasa approved of it because he expected him to be a great warrior.
She helped Yoritomo become Shogun. After Yoritomo died, she endeavored to extend the power of Shogunate government by assisting her two sons, Yoriie and Sanetomo. She became a nun after her husband's death and was called Ama-Shogun (Nun Shogun) or Nii-no-Ama (Nun with Second Rank).
After the assassination of Sanetomo she took charge of Shogunate affairs as guardian of Yoritsune Fujiwara who succeeded Sanetomo. Her actions, however, often served only to benefit her ambitious brother, Yoshitoki.
She was a woman of strong will and quick decision.
