He graduated from the Law Department,Tokyo University in 1921.
Masamichi Shimmei was appointed assistant professor at Tohoku University in 1926. After studying in Europe, he was promoted to professor of Literature Department in 1931.
After the war, he was purged from public office for his wartime connections with the Genron Hokokukai (Patriotic Press Association). He purged (1946) and after being depurged in 1951, he returned to professorship. Books include "Gemeinschaft" and "Man and Society."
