Masanaka Terada was born in 1892 in Ibaraki, Japan.
He graduated from Jikei Medical College. After graduating from Jikei Medical College, he studied bacteriology first at Kitazato Research Institute and then at Institute of Hereditary Research, he proceeded to Europe and America for further studies.
Upon return, Masanaka Terada was conferred a doctorate (1921) and the following year he was appointed professor at his alma mater (1922). He was chief of the Bacteriological Research Institute at his alma mater and concurrently professor at Tokyo Dental College.
