Masao Yamagata was born on January 4, 1898 in Tokyo, Japan.
In 1921, Masao Yamagata graduated from Tokyo University.
In 1921, Yamagata entered Communications Ministry and served as a communications engineer ultimately becoming a director of Shipping Bureau of Transportation Ministry in 1943. He published various theses on the form of vessels, especially on propulsion of singlespiral boats. He was an elected member of the 5th Department of Nihon Gakujutsu Kaigi (Japan Science Council). Since 1947, he worked as a Professor of Tokyo University. His books include Senkeigaku (Science of the Form of Vessels), Chapters on Propulsion and Resistance and Senkei Shi- kenho (Methods of Experiments on the Form of Vessels).
