Masayoshi Kanzaki was born in 1837. He was the eldest son of Masamaro Kanzaki, a retainer of Satsuma (Kagoshima) clan.

Masayoshi Kanzaki was born in 1837. He was the eldest son of Masamaro Kanzaki, a retainer of Satsuma (Kagoshima) clan.
During the Meiji Restoration (1868) Masayoshi Kanzaki distinguished himself and was appointed Chief of the Akasaka Ward, Tokyo (1872). Coming into contact with Kojiro Okawa, a printer, he left Government service and entered the painting trade. While experimenting with the invention of a new sort of matrix he got severely burnt and at one time it was feared that he would have to retire, but with the untiring devotion of his wife Shigeko and the encouragement of his friend Yasuyoshi Katsu, he continued with his experiments and finally succeeded in his task (1882).
