Matabe Kurushima was deeply indignant when his clan members were dismissed from being guards of the Imperial Palace and he made many attempts to kill the retainers of the Emperor who had brought this, but in vain (1863). In The following year, however, he formed a guerrilla squad together with Shinsaku Takasugi and other members of his clan and attacked the Aizu Clan troops at Hamaguri Gate, Kyoto, and although his men were victorious he died fighting against troops of the Satsuma Clan.
