Matdunosuke Kawai was born in 1868.
Upon graduation went to Vladivostok and started a business (1892), which he gave up to join Mitsui & Co. (1899) and was posted first at Port Arthur and then at Dairen. During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) Matdunosuke Kawai distinguished himself in the sales of ammunition. He became chief of the Harbin branch of Mitsui & Co. (1908-1918), during which time he was also manager of Harbin Japanese Club. Resigning from the Mitsui group he founded Hokkai Flour Milling Co. (1913) and the following year established Shoka Bank. During World War I was sent to Russia by the Mitsui group to sell munitions, which he did most ably.
