Araoye was born on January 7, 1940 in Ilawe, Ekiti, Nigeria; the son of John and Elizabeth Ogundolapo (Adekola) Araoye.
Araoye received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965. Five years later he was given a Bachelor of Medicine degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1982 from the University of Lagos.
Araoye began his career as a teacher at Holy Trinity School in 1946 and held it for five years. In 1952, he took the same position at St. James School, where he worked until 1953. Also Matthew served as a teacher at Christ`s School from 1954 to 1961.
In 1962, he became a teacher at the University of Ibadan. Three years later Araoye held the same position at the University of Lagos, where he worked until 1970. In 1977, he became an assistant research professor at George Washington University. Then in 1979, Matthew took a position of a lecturer and a senior lecturer in 1981 at the University of Ilorin. In 1984, he was appointed a professor of medicine at the same university. Since 1979 he was a consultant physician and cardiologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
Also Araoye was a senior consultant physician at Ministry of Health Riyadh. He held a position of the pioneer Provost of the College of Medicine, Benue State University and also the Provost at the College of Medicine in the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
Araoye was a member of Royal College of Physicians, American College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology and Nigerian Cardiac Society.
On August 10, 1974 Matthew Araoye married Abigail Aduke Adewale. They have 5 children.
