He studied at St Mary's College, Galway, and was ordained a priest for the Galway diocese, he received his doctorate in Philosophy from Louvain and became Professor of Ethics and also served some time as vice-president of Maynooth.

Dr. O'Donnell died on September 7, 1996, having suffered a heart attack earlier that year. Two postgraduate scholarships for Maynooth College were named in his honour one in Philosophy and one in Theology.
