Grober received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University in 1981. Seven years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Grober began his career as a teaching fellow of the biology department at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1982 and held it for six years. Also in 1982, he took a position of a president and co-founder of Maritech Inc, where he worked until 1984. Then in 1988, Matthew became a postdoctoral fellow of neurobiology and behavior section at National Institutes of Health of Cornell University. Since 1992 he has been an assistant professor of zoology of the biological science department at the University of Idaho.
Grober is a member of International Society for Neuroethology, Animal Behavior Society, American Society of Zoologists, Society for Neuroscience, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Western Society of Naturalists and Sigma Xi.
On August 17, 1985 Matthew Grober married Debra LeBlanc. They have three children.
