Matthias Altenburg grew up in the Northern Hessian, Baunatal. He finished got a high school diploma at a gymnasium in Kassel. Then he studied Literature and History of Art at the University of Göttingen.
Matthias Altenburg is a freelance writer, journalist, critic, and essayist. He formerly worked as kitchen help, a representative for a vacuum cleaner company, and a waiter. With guitarist Atilla Korap he is a creator and performer of the “Ein kleiner Abend Gluck" musical performance. Altenburg also is an author of film scripts "Das Geheimnis von Wolfshagen" and (with Rolf-Bernhard Essig) "Tage und Nächte."
In 1992, under the title "Kampf zur Flaneuren", Matthias published a sharp statement to the authors of German-speaking contemporary literature, whom he accused of producing literature, which is far from the reality of life. In 2004, under the pseudonym Jan Seghers, he began to publish crime novels modeled after Scandinavian authors such as Henning Mankell and Sjöwall-Wahlöö.
