Fromkes, Maurice was born on February 19, 1872 in Poland. Son of Solomon and Esther (Kaplan) Fromkes.

Education

Brought to America, 1880. Educational public schools New York. Entered Cooper Union, 1888, National Academy Design, 1890, and won prizes in drawing in both instns. first year of entry.

Studied Holland and France, 1899.

Career

Traveled in Italy, 1904, and painted Cardinal Merry del Val, Papal secretary of state (canvas in Vatican), also Sir Edward Elgar, Maurice Renaud in “Thaïs.” Portrait prize Salmagundi Club, 1908. Diploma of honor from International Exhibitors of Fine Arts, Bordeaux, France, 1927. Works in permanent collections: National Museum Modern Art, Madrid, Spain.
