Studied at St. Mary’s College, Oscott, near Birmingham. Sandhurst.
Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 1874. Joined 88th The Connaught Rangers, 1875. Served Kaffir and Zulu Wars, 1877-1879 (medal and clasp, despatches).
Went with 1st Battalion The Connaught Rangers to Natal, November 1899. Was present at the battles of Colenso, Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz. Commanded 1st Battalion from 7 December 1900 till end of the Avar.
Served in Natal, Transvaal, O.R. Colony, Cape Colony. In May 1900, the army being short of mounted men, he mounted and trained 500 men of his regiment, and formed them into a mounted column, which did good 1436 work in Cape Colony and O.R. Colony from May 1900 till the end of tin. War (despatches, BreVet Lieutenant-Colonel, Companion of the Bath).
