Took part in World War I and the Civil War. Joined the Red Army, 1918. Pilot instructor in the 1920s.
In the 1920s and 1930s, as a civilian pilot, made long-distance flights over unexplored territories in the Arctic, Far East and Central Asia. Took part in the rescue of the Cheliuskin expedition, 1934. Commander of Zeppelin formations in the 1930s.
Chief Inspector of Civil Aviation. Head of the Academy of Civil Aviation, 1939. On active service during World War II. At Naval Aviation HQ, 1944-1945.
