In 1981 he finished secondary school №15 in the city of Chardzhou. In 1988 he graduated from National Aerospace University – Kharkiv Aviation Institute on a speciality "Engines of aircraft", qualification "engineer-mechanic". After graduation from the Institute in 1988 he worked in the Central specialized design Bureau of the State scientific and production rocket and space center "CSKB-PROGRESS" (Samara) of the Russian space Agency as an engineer to a leading design engineer.

On 29 March 1996 he was appointed as a candidate test cosmonaut from GNP RKTs "TsSKB - PROGRESS»;
from June 1996 to March 1998 he passed General space training at GCTC Gagarin;

October 2013 – instructor-test-cosmonaut, 1st class, Deputy commander of the cosmonaut corps of Russian space for research and testing work.

PREPARATION FOR SPACE FLIGHTS:
from October 1998 to December 2001 he passed training as a member of the cosmonaut group for the International space station flight program;
from December 2001 to April 2002 he was training in Soyuz TM-34 TPK backup crew as part of EP-3 on ISS;
from April 2002 to February 2004 he passed training for a space flight with cosmonaut of Russian space Gennady Padalka and NASA astronaut Michael Fincke (E. Michael Fincke) as a flight engineer of the ISS expedition-9, then as part of the main crew of ISS-11 with NASA astronaut John Phillips (John L. Phillips). In connection with a change in the flight program of the ISS the crews were reorganized;
from March 2004 to March 2006 he was trained as a member of the cosmonaut group under the ISS flight program;
from March 2006 to March 2008 he passed training for a space mission the crew of ISS expedition 17 with Russian space cosmonaut Sergei Volkov, NASA astronauts Garrett Reisman (Garret E. Reisman) and Gregory by Chamitoff (Gregory E. Chamitoff) and spaceflight participant S Solon (So - yeon Yi) (South Korea) as a flight engineer of TPK "Union TMA-12" and the ISS flight engineer;
from December 2009 to October 2010 he passed training as a member of the backup crew of ISS-25/26 with Russian space cosmonaut Sergei Volkov and NASA astronaut Ronald Garan (Garan, Ronald J. Jr.) as a flight engineer TPK "Soyuz TMA-01M" and the ISS flight engineer;
from October 2010 to June 2011 he passed training for a space flight within the backup crew of ISS-28/29 with NASA astronaut Don Pettit (Don Pettit) and ESA astronaut Andre Cowper (André Kuipers) as the commander of TPK
"TMA-02M Union" and the ISS flight engineer;
from June 2011 to December 2011 he was training with NASA astronaut Don Pettit (Don Pettit) and ESA astronaut Andre Kaupers (André Kuipers) as Soyuz TMA-03M commander, ISS-30 flight engineer and ISS-31 commander as part of the ISS-30 Prime crew;
from January 2013 to November 2014 he passed training as a member of the backup crew of ISS-42/43 with JAXA astronaut by Kimia Yui and NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren, as the commander of TPK "Soyuz TMA-15M" and the ISS flight engineer;
from November 2014 to July 2015 he was preparing for the ISS-44/45 Prime crew as Soyuz TMA-17M commander and ISS-44/45 flight engineer.
COMPLETED COSMIC FLIGHTS::
1 flight from 8 April to 24 October 2008, O. D. Kononenko performed as the flight engineer of TPK "Union TMA-12" and the flight engineer of ISS-17. During the flight he performed two spacewalks with a total duration of 12 hours 16 minutes. The flight duration was 199 days.
2 flight - from 21 Dec 2011 to 1 July 2012 made the crew 30/31-th expedition to the ISS as the commander of TPK "Soyuz TMA-03M", flight engineer of ISS-30 commander and ISS-31. During the flight, he performed a spacewalk with a duration of 6 hours 15 minutes. The flight duration was 193 days.
