In 1928, graduated from Tokyo University. He also studied in Germany.
Served as professor of 3rd Higher School, of Hosei University, of Kinki University at Osaka in 1958. While studying in Germany, received instruction from Professor Betram of Cologne in 1949-1950. After returning was actively engaged in critical work as staff member of Nippon Roman-ha magazine. Devoted himself to translation of works by German authors, especially of Goethe and Hesse, producing many critical works including "Goethe" and "Treatise on Rilke."
