Mehmet Serdar Binnet was born on April 23, 1955, in Ankara, Turkey. Throughout his career he has combined orthopedic surgery with academic medicine and sports medicine, becoming particularly active in the treatment of sports injuries and disorders of the knee and ankle.
Binnet received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1978. He completed residency training in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Ankara University between 1979 and 1984. His postgraduate training included clinical fellowships at the University of Basel, Freiburg University under a DAAD Fellowship, and the AO Foundation in Switzerland. He later completed a Physician Executive MBA at the University of Tennessee, Haslam College of Business, in 2014.
Binnet joined the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Ankara University as a resident in 1979. During his training he completed clinical appointments in Switzerland before fulfilling military service as an orthopedic surgeon at the Military Hospital in Sivas between 1984 and 1985. He subsequently served at Ankara Numune Research Hospital before returning to Ankara University.
He became Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology in 1989 and was promoted to Professor in 1995. At Ankara University's İbni Sina Hospital he taught orthopedic surgery, supervised clinical training, and conducted research in sports traumatology, arthroscopy, knee surgery, ligament reconstruction, cartilage repair, and ankle surgery. From 2016 to 2020 he directed the University's Center for Healthcare Strategies and Policy.
Internationally, Binnet served as Visiting Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1997, 1999, and 2004, following an earlier research fellowship there in 1992. Between 2004 and 2022 he was Consulting Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Merkezi Klinika Hospital in Baku, Azerbaijan. Since 2012 he has served as Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at Acıbadem Healthcare Group, Ankara Hospital.
Alongside his academic career, Binnet has played an important role in sports medicine. He served as orthopedic consultant and later team physician for the Turkish Football Federation, became Chairman of its Medical Committee, was a member of the UEFA Medical Committee, and subsequently served as a FIFA Medical and Doping Control Officer.
Binnet has authored numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and conference presentations in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. His research has focused on knee surgery, sports traumatology, arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, cartilage restoration, ankle surgery, and rehabilitation. His publications are indexed in major biomedical databases, including Google Scholar.
Binnet became a Diplomate of the Turkish Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology and has been recertified by the Turkish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology. He has held leadership positions within ISAKOS, the International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society, the Turkish Football Federation, and other professional organizations. His work has combined academic orthopedic surgery with sports medicine at both the national and international levels.
