Melanie Tem was born on April 11, 1949 in Pennsylvania, United States. She grew up in Saegertown.
Melanie Tem attended Allegheny College and earned a master's degree in social work at the University of Denver.
Melanie Tem, an author of horror novels as well as short story collections, focused her work on the psychological state of mind of her characters. Tem's premier novel, Prodigal, about a dysfunctional family preyed on by a menace, was published in 1991. Prodigal is told from the viewpoint of a fifth-grade girl, Lucy, the third of seven children in a middle-class family. After the oldest son disappears and his ghost seemingly haunts the house, his body is found. Then the next oldest teenage sibling disappears, and a terrible pattern is set.
Although Blood Moon was published only in England and appeared after Prodigal, it had been written earlier than Tem's American debut. Blood Moon concerns the relationship between a single mother and her adopted pre-adolescent son.
Tem teamed up with horror writer Nancy Holder to create Making Love, a novel about a forty-year-old virgin named Charlotte who dreams of a romantic encounter and is given a "dream lover." They also wrote Witch-Light together.
Some of her solo short work is collected in The Ice Downstream, while her collaborations with her husband, Steve Rasnic Tem, are gathered in In Concert, which was published in 2010.
All in all, Melanie published numerous short stories, eleven solo novels, two collaborative novels with Nancy Holder and two with her husband. Her latest work The Yellow Wood was published in 2015.
In addition to her short stories and novels, Tem also performed oral storytelling.
It's also worth noting, that, during her lifetime, Tem mentored students through critiquing and private workshops. When she wasn't writing, she served as a social worker and administrator with the elderly, disabled, and children.
