(In the 1920's and 1930's, photography transformed and dom...)
In the 1920's and 1930's, photography transformed and dominated the United States' cultural landscape. This work examines the camera work of five women, who contributed to the growing dependence of Americans upon visual images for information about the world around them. Together, these women visually articulated the essential ideas, occupying the American consciousness in the years between the world wars. Combining feminist biography with analysis of visual texts, Melissa McEuen considers the various prisms, through which each woman saw America, taking into account the force of personal agendas. What emerged in their photographs helped Americans mold perceptions of themselves and others, who inhabited the nation's myriad regions.

(Using perspectives of cultural studies and feminist theor...)
Using perspectives of cultural studies and feminist theory and drawing on war propaganda, popular advertising, government records and hundreds of accounts, written by women in the 1940's, McEuen examines how extensively women's bodies and minds became "battlegrounds" in the United States fight for victory in World War II.

(During World War II well over a quarter of a million Amer...)
During World War II well over a quarter of a million American women volunteered for military service, participating in all branches of the armed forces (army, navy, marines and coast guard) in newly-created all-female auxiliaries, as well as the United States Army Nurse Corps. However, until recently their contribution to the war effort has been largely absent from the histories of that conflict, overshadowed by the attention to the iconic "Rosie the Riveter", representing women's service on the home front and in industry. In this work, oral historian Jeffrey S. Suchanek at last accords these women the front-and-center attention their service merits. Based on first-hand interviews he conducted with women veterans from all of the service branches, he presents here the memoirs of twenty women, who collectively demonstrate, that the honor of Greatest Generation does not belong to their male counterparts alone. Foreword was written by Melissa Ann Mceuen.

2015Quotations: "I write because there are so many untold stories about women. As a discipline, women's history is relatively young - there's so much yet to be discovered, mined and interpreted. Researching and writing about other women's lives helps me make sense of my own life and work, and I hope, that my readers are able to realize the bridge between themselves and those, who lived in the past."
Melissa is a member of the American Studies Association, the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association, the Southern Association for Women Historians and the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association.
