Fascinating history of how the merchants and political leaders of New Orleans were blinded to the early promise of railroads by their conviction that the Mississippi River was all the city needed to promote flourishing trade. The author traces how disinterest in major railroad building led to dwindling trade for the city and how, when the "river psychology" proved damaging, Louisiana wasted precious resources on rural short lines which were poorly built, poorly managed and little used while neglecting the one trunk line -- the New Orleans & Nashville -- that could have been the nucleus for an extensive system. By 1850 New Orleans was two decades behind other regions in developing a regional system. In the 1850s, the business and political leaders finally realized the need for better railroads and the Great Northern was completed into Mississippi and the Great Western was built to Berwick Bay but efforts to build into North Texas failed because of insufficient funding. The Civil War interrupted any further efforts and essentially destroyed what did exist. This a well-done regional history examining the many lost opportunities that still find echoes today. 172 pages with index.
