Morris attended Munro College. He studied at the University College of the West Indies (UWI) and as a Rhodes Scholar at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.
Morris worked as an assistant registar at the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica from 1966 to 1970, later became senior lecturer in English at the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica from 1970 to 1972. Then he became senior English master at Munro College. Besides, he was visiting lecturer at the University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom in 1972-1973. He was also a reader of West Indian literature and is currently professor emeritus at the University of the West Indies.
Morris is married and has two sons and one daughter.
