Background
Michael McMillan was born on 15 February 1944 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Edinburgh has been Scotland's capital since the fifteenth century, when it became the seat of the royal court, the Privy Council, Parliament and the law.
The city's legal character was established early. The Court of Session, Scotland's central civil-law court, was set up in Edinburgh in 1532. After the Act of Union of 1707 ended the city's role as a political capital, Edinburgh remained home to the Court of Session and the High Court of Justiciary, keeping it at the centre of the Scottish legal profession.
Scottish solicitors are represented and regulated by the Law Society of Scotland, which was established by statute in 1949. Its origins lay in earlier efforts to form a national professional body for solicitors, which began in the early nineteenth century.
