Michael Tim Spooner was born on July 2, 1954, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. He is the son of Robert Smith and Marlene (Wold) Spooner.
Spooner graduated from Grace College with a Bachelor of Religious Education degree in 1976. He also obtained his Master of Arts degree in English from Northern Arizona University in 1979.
Before becoming a publisher and writer, Spooner worked variously as a jeweller, furniture finisher, and did other jobs from 1972 till 1984.
In 1986, Spooner started his career as a publisher and writer. He started by holding various positions at the National Council of Teachers of English in Urbana, Illinois. He first worked as an assistant director/project manager and since 1988, worked as a senior editor for publications there.
In 1993, Spooner became a director of the Utah State University Press. He held that position till 2012, and since then, he works as a freelance writer and as an associate director at the University Press of Colorado.

Spooner married Sylvia Read on September 10, 1988. The couple has 2 children: Nancy and Isaac.
