The Time Bandit Solution won the 2015 Axiom Business Book Award for operations management, lean, and continuous improvement by Independent Publisher, which honors books that help the business community understand changing trends and technologies and point out opportunities in our complicated new economy. You may not realize you are at the mercy of time bandits - people who steal your precious time, not with malice or intention but with crippling effect on your own pursuits. They steal 40 to 60 percent of your time. And because your worst time bandits are probably your family, colleagues, clients, bosses, and friends, we can't just say no - we would risk offending them or, worse, losing clients or getting fired. Thus The Time Bandit Solution is a step-by-step lesson on how to recover stolen time you never knew you had. It is designed to teach you the arts and skills for graciously negotiating with the Time Bandits to prevent interruptions from sapping your productivity and satisfaction. The Time Bandit Solution also explains how the damage they cause lingers well beyond the interruption itself, how the stress of interruptions subtracts joy from your most important endeavors, and how to redeploy the time you recover.

(A comprehensive overview of Native American spiritual pri...)
A comprehensive overview of Native American spiritual principles and their application for personal spirit-healing. • Includes traditional sacred exercises, teaching tales, case studies, and suggested rituals for individual and group healing. • Outlines the core principals of Native American traditional values and teaches how to apply them to the contemporary path of wellness and healing. • Publication to coincide with annual Full Circle gathering in September 2002 The Four Directions, the four seasons, and the four elements that make up the sacred hoop of the full circle must be in right relationship with one another or disharmony will result. Native American ritual has always emphasized the restoration of balance through ceremonies that provide a forum for learning, transition, and expressions of personal growth. Now Cherokee authors J. T. and Michael Garrett share Native American traditions to explore interrelationships as a tool for growth and transformation. The Cherokee Full Circle gathers techniques representing Native American cultures from across America--stories, exercises, and individual and group rituals--to teach the inherent dynamics of right relationship and apply them to the healing path. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of Native American spiritual principles and traditions and demonstrate how these ideas and methods can be applied universally to deal with life's situations--from depression and grieving to finding purpose and establishing positive relationships.

( Michael Palin's epic voyages have seen him circumnaviga...)
Michael Palin's epic voyages have seen him circumnavigate the globe, travel from the North to the South Pole and circle the countries of the Pacific Ocean, but perhaps the greatest single challenge he has faced is his latest, a crossing of the vast and merciless Sahara Desert. As the journey unfolds, the Sahara reveals not only the emptiness of endless sand dunes, but a huge and diverse range of cultures and landscapes, and a long history of civilisation, trade, commerce and conquest. He walks with nomadic herders and rides with a camel caravan through Niger, scales the Hoggar Mountains and flies into the oilfields of Algeria, before investigating Colonel Gaddafi's Libya and the stunning classical remains of Tunisia, where Life of Brian was filmed and Palin crucified. This is Michael Palin, explorer-adventurer, at his hard-pressed best.

( This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on t...)
This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the increasingly important and controversial subject of race relations in Brazil. North American scholars of race relations frequently turn to Brazil for comparisons, since its history has many key similarities to that of the United States. Brazilians have commonly compared themselves with North Americans, and have traditionally argued that race relations in Brazil are far more harmonious because the country encourages race mixture rather than formal or informal segregation. More recently, however, scholars have challenged this national myth, seeking to show that race relations are characterized by exclusion, not inclusion, and that fair-skinned Brazilians continue to be privileged and hold a disproportionate share of wealth and power. In this sociological and demographic study, Edward Telles seeks to understand the reality of race in Brazil and how well it squares with these traditional and revisionist views of race relations. He shows that both schools have it partly right--that there is far more miscegenation in Brazil than in the United States--but that exclusion remains a serious problem. He blends his demographic analysis with ethnographic fieldwork, history, and political theory to try to "understand" the enigma of Brazilian race relations--how inclusiveness can coexist with exclusiveness. The book also seeks to understand some of the political pathologies of buying too readily into unexamined ideas about race relations. In the end, Telles contends, the traditional myth that Brazil had harmonious race relations compared with the United States encouraged the government to do almost nothing to address its shortcomings.

For forty-four days, Michael Benanav lived and travelled with the Van Gujjars, a forest-dwelling tribe of nomadic buffalo herders in northern India. He went to document their traditional way of life, but there was trouble on the trail: the Uttarakhand forest department threatened to block nomadic families from the pastures they relied on for the survival of their herds.A fascinating account of life on the road with nomads, this book tells the story of one family s quest to save their buffaloes, and themselves. It portrays an intimate picture of the hopes, fears, hardships and joys of people who wonder if there is still a place for them on this planet.

(These collected short stories are an eclectic mix of ripp...)
These collected short stories are an eclectic mix of ripping yarns and surreal flights of fancy. Ranging from the tale of a Cambridge undergraduate in the 1930’s who uses his night climbing escapades with like minded chums, which, while not strictly illegal, is frowned on by the university authorities, to cover his cat burgling activities and the unexpected twists that ensue. Through to the escapades of a young lady librarian who can fly, and the subsequent trouble this inadvertently lands her in. Followed by the tale of a ruthless Scotland yard detective, seen as something of a dandy, who sets out to kill his enemies against the backdrop of the siege of Sydney Street in 1911. This is counterbalanced by the humorous but surreal story of a mischievous, and manipulative, talking dog, who gets his hapless innocent human dupe, very reluctantly, into all sorts of scrapes. The final story concerns the Cambridge undergraduate now relocated to London and still carrying on his cat burgling activities, but gets caught and is blackmailed into burgling a safe for the intelligence services. But this is no ordinary safe, but one belonging to Joachim Von Ribbontrop, and leads our hero into very dangerous waters. The story is set against the backdrop of the outbreak of war in the late 1930’s.

(Excerpt from The Bright Side of Humanity: Glimpses of Lif...)
Excerpt from The Bright Side of Humanity: Glimpses of Life in Every Land Showing the Distinctive Noble Traits of All Races In the arrangement of this volume I have avoided the conventional grouping of subjects according to geographical or political relations, and have sought to secure as far as practicable such variety as would enhance the pleasure of the general reader. This will explain not only the apparent lack of formal arrangement, but also the omission of some familiar names which one would ordinarily expect to find in a book of this character. For instance, there is no chapter devoted to the Austrians, as such, for the reason that they are Germans? and Austria is only a "political expression." An exception has been made in favor of the Swiss who, though being but the overflow population of surrounding countries, have lived to themselves long enough to develop some characteristic traits. The widely varying character of the several chapters is due chiefly to the fact that I have contented myself with the available material without calling in the aid of the imagination or a superfluous vocabulary. ( Experts believe that Brazil, the world’s fifth largest ...)
Experts believe that Brazil, the world’s fifth largest country and its seventh largest economy, will be one of the most important global powers by the year 2030. Yet far more attention has been paid to the other rising behemoths Russia, India, and China. Often ignored and underappreciated, Brazil, according to renowned, award-winning journalist Michael Reid, has finally begun to live up to its potential, but faces important challenges before it becomes a nation of substantial global significance. After decades of military rule, the fourth most populous democracy enjoyed effective reformist leadership that tamed inflation, opened the country up to trade, and addressed poverty and other social issues, enabling Brazil to become more of an essential participant in global affairs. But as it prepares to host the 2014 soccer World Cup and 2016 Olympics, Brazil has been rocked by mass protest. This insightful volume considers the nation’s still abundant problemsan inefficient state, widespread corruption, dysfunctional politics, and violent crime in its citiesalongside its achievements to provide a fully rounded portrait of a vibrant country about to take a commanding position on the world stage.

Over time, totem poles came to be perceived as generalized icons of "Indian life" and Native groups all across North America began making model totems for the ever-expanding tourism industry that attended the popularization of automobile travel. (Excerpt from Young Americans in Japan: Or the Adventures ...)
Excerpt from Young Americans in Japan: Or the Adventures of the Jewett Family and Their Friend Oto Nambo Twenty-seven years ago an armed fleet "thundered at the gates of Japan," and, in the name of humanity, requested that its harbors should "be opened to the distressed ships of Western nations." I was a member of that expedition, and heard the haughty reply of the official, which was thus interpreted: "Return from whence you came. No foreigner is permitted to land on our sacred soil!" How we received this command is a matter of history. When I first landed in Japan, the feudal system was in full force; the Mikado (Emperor) was virtually a prisoner in Kioto, and none of his subjects were allowed to leave the country. To-day the Mikado rules the land, moves among his subjects like a Western monarch, and is seeking, by every means, to elevate the condition of his people. Japanese merchants are doing business in the principal cities of the world, her earnest students are to be found in our great colleges, and her art illuminates our homes, and has won the admiration of all nations. Before the first treaty was signed, our ships visited Yezo, and for some time cruised in Japanese waters. I thus had an opportunity of seeing the islands, and of becoming thoroughly acquainted with the coast. At a later period, I returned to the country, lived among its estimable people, studied their language and literature, and, what they term, "learned their hearts." This book describes the adventures of an American family and a young Japanese who has been educated in the States. They land at Nagasaki, proceed overland to Kokura, cross the strait to Shimonoseki, remain awhile in the province of Nagato, sail up the Inland Sea to Tokio, visit some of its celebrated places, and enjoy the delights of the New ears festivities, conducted in the olden style. (In novels such as Last Summer and Looking For It, Michael...)
In novels such as Last Summer and Looking For It, Michael Thomas Ford has honestly and lovingly explored the intimate details of gay men’s lives, from hot sex and lasting relationships to friendship and the search for family. Now he’s crafted his most extraordinary novel yet, a powerful saga of three friends and lovers whose story spans decades and whose bonds have finally come Full Circle. History professor Ned Brummel is living happily with his partner of twelve years in small-town Maine when he receives a phone call from his estranged friend—Jack—telling him that another friend—Andy—is very ill and possibly near death. It is news that shatters the peace of his world for many reasons. And as Ned boards a plane to Chicago on his way to his friend’s bedside, he embarks on another journey into memory, examining the major events and small moments that have shaped his world and his relationships with these two very different, very important men. Growing up together through the restrictive 1950’s and confusing ‘60’s, Jackson "Jack" Grace and Ned Brummel took solace in their love for each other. But once they arrive at college in 1969 and meet handsome farm boy Andy Kowalski, everything changes. Despite Andy’s apparent heterosexuality, both Jack and Ned fall hard for him, straining their close friendship. Soon, the three men will become involved in a series of intense liaisons and bitter betrayals, coming together and flying apart, as they alternately hurt, love, shape, and heal one another over the course of years. From the heady, drug- and sex-fueled days of San Francisco in the wild seventies to the haunting spectre of AIDS in the eighties and the righteous activism of the nineties, their relationship transforms and grows, reflecting the changes going on around them. Now, together again in the most crucial and intimate of settings, Ned, Jack, and Andy have another chance to confront the damage of the past and embrace the bonds of friendship and love that have stood the test of time. Full Circle is a wonderfully moving chronicle of three friends that is also an unflinching, triumphant celebration of the power of gay friendships, of the deep bonds forged despite strong obstacles, and of the love that is ultimately the most important thing we can ever share.

In his most challenging journey to date, Palin tackles the Himalayas, the greatest mountain range on earth. It is a virtually unbroken wall of rock stretching 1,800 miles from the borders of Afghanistan to south-west China. Penetrated but never conquered, it remains the world's most majestic natural barrier, a magnificent wilderness that shapes the history and politics of Asia to this day. Having previously risen to the challenge of seas, poles, and deserts, the highest mountains in the world were a natural target for Michael Palin. In a journey rarely, if ever, attempted before, in six months of hard traveling Palin takes on the full length of the Himalaya including the Khyber Pass, the hidden valleys of the Hindu Kush, ancient cities like Peshawar and Lahore, the mighty peaks of K2, Annapurna, and Everest, the bleak and barren plateau of Tibet, the gorges of the Yangtze, the tribal lands of the Indo-Burmese border, and the vast Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh. He also passes through political flashpoints including Pakistan's remote north-west frontier, terrorist-torn Kashmir, and the mountains of Nagaland.

The entrance of Native Americans into the world of cultural resource management is forcing a change in the traditional paradigms that have guided archaeologists, anthropologists, and other CRM professionals. This book examines these developments from tribal perspectives and articulates native views on the identification of cultural resource, how they should be handled and by whom, and what their meaning is in contemporary life. Stapp and Burney also demonstrate the connections between cultural resource and other issues such as native sovereignty, economic development, human rights, and cultural integrity.

( Under-armed in hostile territory, and foolishly employi...)
Under-armed in hostile territory, and foolishly employing the enemy as guides, the one hundred explorers were ambushed and stranded without camels or supplies in the deserts of southern Algeria. Many were killed outright, and for four months the survivors were menaced by the Tuareg, the “lords of the desert,” robbed, starved, and tricked into eating poisoned fruit. To escape, the men hid in the wastelands of the Sahara with little hope of finding food or water. Finally forced to eat each other, only a dozen men lived to tell their tale. The story of their one-thousand-mile journey is one of the most astonishing narratives of survival ever recorded.
