Michael Ray Taylor was born on September 20, 1959, in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States. He is a son of Dan Floyd Taylor, a state counselor, and Joyce Ann Taylor (maiden name Pittman), a paralegal.
Michael Ray Taylor received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Florida State University in 1980. Then, he enrolled in the graduate creative writing program at the University of South Carolina. He studied how to teach college composition and literature courses under James Dickey and William Price Fox.
After attending William Emerson’s lecture in 1984, he signed up for his magazine-writing class. Hooked on nonfiction, Taylor discovered journalism as literature, and devoured McPhee, Wolfe, Talese, Frazier, Kusz, Kidder, and many others, along with various critical readings concerning creative nonfiction as a literary genre. He completed his Master of Arts in English in 1989.
Seven years later, Michael Ray Taylor obtained a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Arkansas.
The start of Michael Ray Taylor’s career can be counted from 1986 when he relocated with his wife to the suburbs of New York City and began freelancing in earnest for such magazines as Sports Illustrated, Audubon, McCall’s, Outside, and many others. Whenever possible, he wrote pieces that indulged in his longtime hobby, cave exploration. He has also taught occasional adjunct courses in fiction and creative nonfiction, finding that he was more productive when leading a workshop than when left to his own devices.
So, from 1987 to 1990, Taylor served a creative writing instructor at Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York. A year later, he joined the staff of Henderson State University as an assistant professor of journalism serving in that capacity for five years till he was named an associate professor.
The assignment coincided with the publication of his first book, ‘Cave Passages: Roaming the Underground Wilderness’, which placed his earlier magazine features and essays on cave exploration in a linear narrative and reflected his development as a caver who has led expeditions around the world for National Geographic and Smithsonian.
In addition to his contributions in writing, Taylor has also consulted on feature films and has worked on documentaries for National Geographic, PBS and The Discovery Channel.
Nowadays, Michael Ray Taylor is a professor of communication at Henderson State University and head of its Communication and Theatre Arts Department.
