He is self-taught in photography.
He began working as a portraitist in St. Tropez, France, in 1968. Kempf has written several hundred articles about photography as a fine art for various magazines, including Photo Revue. Since 1977 he has taught photography at l'Ecole Supérieure d'Arts Graphiques in Paris as well as working in his own studio in Paris since 1974.
He also works on the technical problems of conservation and has written several articles on the subject. He was engaged in the restoration of plates by Atget for the National Collection of France.
