Michel Temer is a Brazilian politician, lawyer, and author. He became the President of Brazil in 2016 following the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff by the Senate and held the post for the next two years.
Background
Ethnicity:
Temer's parents immigrated from Lebanon to Brazil, fleeing from World War I.
Michel Temer was born on September 23, 1940, in Tiete, Sao Paulo, Brazil into a family of Nakhoul "Miguel" Elias Temer Lulia and March Barbar Lulia. He was the youngest of the eight children.
Education
Michel Temer had a dream of being a pianist and writer in his childhood and youth. In high school, he studied hard sciences and math till he failed chemistry and physics classes. In 1957, he went to São Paulo where he completed his secondary education in humanities and languages.
In 1959, Temer entered the Law School of the University of São Paulo where he studied for four years. He was a treasurer of the school's students' union as a freshman. In 1974, Michel Temer earned a doctorate in public law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo.
The start of Michel Temer's career can be counted from the post of a constitutional law professor that he occupied at his alma mater, the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, soon after graduating. In 1964, he joined the staff of the Department of Education of São Paulo state, and was assigned state prosecutor six years later. He has served as the state's attorney general since 1983, and as São Paulo's secretary of public safety since 1984.
Two years later, Michel Temer entered the centre-right Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro, or PMDB) and joined the National Constituent Assembly, which elaborated a new constitution in 1987. That same year, Temer began the first of his six terms in the federal Chamber of Deputies, being its speaker three times. He served again at the São Paulo Department of Public Safety in between his tenures. Temer had headed the PMDB National Committee since 2001.
Temer was named the Vice President of Brazil after the victory of Dilma Rousseff, from the Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores, or PT) on the 2011 presidential elections, the same as after her reelection four years later.
Following the start of impeachment proceedings of Rousseff, on May 12, 2016, for alleged frauds with state budget, Temer became acting president. By August 31 of the same year, when Rousseff was removed from the post, Temer stood to complete his predecessor's tenure, which was to last until January 2019.
In spring 2017, Temer was charged himself for having used illicit funds to finance his 2014 electoral campaign as Rousseff's running mate. The politician denied the charges and refused to leave office. The corruption scandal had bad influence on his public approval ratings which went down from 10 to 5 percent. However, the so-called business class preserved the credibility to him.
The official bribery charges against Temer were filed by the country's prosecutor general in June but the 227 votes of the Chamber of Deputies were insufficient to put the politician on trial. On June 9, the electoral court ruled 4–3 to dismiss the case against the Temer-Rousseff campaign organization, citing insufficient evidence.
Michel Temer was again at risk of trial in October of that same year, this time beacause of the scandal involving the Brazilian businessmann Joesley Batista and the meatpacking firm. The vote of the Chamber of Deputies was again on his behalf: 233 deputies voted to put the statesman on trial, and 251 voted against. Meanwhile, Temer's public approval ratings dropped to 3 percent according to some polls.

Michel Temer has often stated to be affiliated with Roman Catholic church.
Politics
Michel Temer tried to strengthen the economy by adopting pro-market policies, pushing for adopting of new labour laws and the restructuring of pensions, and introducing austerity measures, such as cuts in public services, for example. This approach showed positive impact when inflation and interest rates dipped in Brazil.
Temer's decree which prescribed to abolish Reserva Nacional do Cobre e Associados (Renca) Amazonian reserve in the country's northern states of Pará and Amapá in order to gave private companies, including agro-business ones, opportunities to do mining and the conversion of forest, was strongly criticized and was revoked on September 26, 2017.
Personality
Being of Lebanese ancestry, Michel Temer doesn't speak Arabic fluently but he comprehends easily the spoken language.
Connections
As of today, Michel Temer was legally married twice.
With his first wife, Maria Célia de Toledo, he had three daughters, Luciana, Maristela, and Clarissa. Toledo and Temer divorced in 1987.
After, the politician was romantically involved with a journalist Érica Ferraz. She gave birth to a boy Eduardo in 1999. Temer also had a love affair with Neusa Popinigis.
In 2003, the statesman married a former model and beauty queen Marcela Tedeschi, who is forty-three years his junior. They had a son named after his father.
